Mary Elizabeth Sabieh

Biography

Mary Elizabeth Sabieh says that she has been writing for as long as she can remember. Even as a child, her English teacher would have to remind her, “Betty, we are learning grammar…not creative writing!"

Still, Sabieh’s passion only took form when she was recuperating from hip-replacement surgery and her daughter, Christine – in an attempt to ease her mother’s boredom – suggested that she write a cookbook. The result – The Simple Cooking Guide to Lebanese and Syrian Cuisine was published in 1999 by Librarie du Liban.

Sabieh is also a freelance writer and editor. Her work has been featured in international publications like Prestige International magazine and Eco newspaper. She had a column, “Taste of the Week," in Lebanon’s Daily Star newspaper and was the food editor of Society magazine. In addition, she has translated six children’s books on nature for Dal-el-Chimal in 2005 and she contributed to Green Gold – The Story of Lebanese Olive Oil.

Sabieh was born and raised in Summit, New Jersey and moved to the Middle East with her husband, Christo, after graduating from New York University. She has two daughters: Christine Sabieh, a psychologist and professor, and Dr. Caroline S. Akhras, a professor of business. She also has two granddaughters, Raphaelle and Jade.
