turningpoint beginnings
Back in 1999, two friends living in Beirut had a spark of inspiration. Relocating to Lebanon after living in Europe had been a frustrating experience for both. Admittedly, Beirut was emerging from a seventeen-year civil war, but there was a general lack of information about the city that made the adaptation process doubly difficult. A quick browse through bookstores revealed antiquated guidebooks, nothing that could help with the practical aspects of moving to the city, settling in and living there. The seed for a project was planted in their minds: why not encapsulate these elements in a guidebook to help newcomers?
After more than a year of research, writing and pre-press – much of it done around a dining room table – Turning Point released its inaugural publication, the first edition of At Home in Beirut. Thankfully, At Home in Beirut has proven to be a successful format, valued for its practical advice and wealth of information. A third edition was published in 2007, and there are plans to expand the format to other Middle Eastern countries.
turningpoint today
Turning Point has come a long way since 1999. Our dynamic editorial, marketing and financial teams work out of an office in Verdun, in the heart of the Lebanese capital. We now publish three guidebook formats for Lebanon. In addition, we also publish coffee table books, humor titles and Arabic-language children's books and have plans to release many new titles in the coming years. Our vibrant and eclectic mix of publications, intended to entertain, inform and contribute to cultural understanding, reflect the complexity of our home city, Beirut: a place that confounds expectation and has the ability to survive and thrive, whatever the circumstances. | |
